Papyrus Series
2017—Current
Papyrus Series is based on the ancient messages written on papyrus thousands of years ago from Egypt, Greece and Italy, and on paper initially invented in China then introduced to Japan. The contents seem surprisingly familiar and universal to us. There are letters, for instance, from a man in a battlefield to his mother, from a woman to her lover, and from a family to invite their friends for dinner. While the faded written message is no longer decipherable today, the papyrus/paper has become an object preserving the trace of communication generated from an unknown sender to a recipient. As this series develops, the drawn images shift from closely depicting the original letters to abstraction, and ultimately emerge the passage of time and transient remembrance.
